Laboratory Model

Physical model testing of breakwaters

The stakes

Physical models allow for the testing and validation of the design of artificial rock protective layer before actual construction.

Whether in a wave channel or a 3D basin, series of waves are sent towards the scale model of the breakwater, which is made up of miniature concrete blocks placed by hand according to design rules to represent the actual structure on a reduced scale.

For a maritime construction company, being able to verify all these parameters as the project progresses is crucial to validate the laying sections and avoid costly additional dismantling/reassembling days.

The 3D model in laboratories

Numerical twin applied to physical models

With SEABIM®, there are no more approximate photo comparisons of the model before and after. To create the 3D model in the laboratory, a scan of the physical model, previously put to dry, is performed using a static LiDAR or photogrammetry.

The 3D modeling process works equally well for scale models and full-scale models, only the density of the point cloud needs to be increased to maintain enough points per block for robust block identification. The 3D model of the structure before submitting it to the wave series is generated with our Seabim Editor software.

After each wave series, a new scan is performed to update the 3D model with the new point cloud. The displacement of the blocks is then calculated in the software and exported as a spreadsheet for detailed analysis.
