The context
To ensure the integrity and longevity of rock armour layers, meticulous implementation and conscientious maintenance are indispensable. Following the guidelines advocated by the reference document, “the rock manual" it is imperative to adhere to a strict placement protocol to guarantee the stability of these structures. This protocol establishes clear criteria for rock dimensions, material quality, interstice between rocks, and relative arrangement of blocks, among other aspects.
Beyond the construction phase, a systematic monitoring program is essential. This surveillance allows for the prompt detection and addressing of any erosion, displacement, or settling that may affect the structure.
Unlike single-layer concrete blocks where each unit must be precisely modeled, monitoring of this type of structure focuses more on identifying areas lacking material and employing statistical approaches to anticipate replenishment operations or profile adjustments.

Calculation of rock layer metrics
Since it is not feasible to use automated shape identification tools for such stones with irregular contours, we have implemented a robust segmentation algorithm in SEABIM® that isolates each individual rock in the point cloud.
The segmented point cloud enables the measurement of important metrics of the armor layer according to the rock manual, such as block density, apparent diameter distribution, or block movement between two surveys.
This innovative algorithm is applicable to both aerial and high-resolution underwater data for rock gradations ranging from 60-300 kgs.
