Construction monitoring

The challenge

Concrete Armour Unit placement

One of the most critical aspects of constructing an armor layer with Concrete Armour Units (Accropode™, Core-Loc™, Xbloc®) is the control of interlocking quality.

Block interlocking refers to precise placement according to the rules of designers to ensure the solidity of the armor. These rules are multiple and include placement density, positioning and relative orientation of a block with its neighbors, the risk of block extraction from the armor, and the number of contacts.

For a maritime construction company, being able to verify all these parameters as the project progresses is crucial to validate sections and avoid costly additional dismantling/reassembling days.

However, a simple visual inspection of the armor does not allow for detailed quantification of these placement criteria. Additionally, the submerged part of the armor layer often proves impossible to inspect with an underwater camera when visibility is insufficient

The 3D model

Optimize your breakwater construction project with a 3D model

The main advantage of a computer-based as-built 3D model is the ability to clearly visualize the armor layer and accurately quantify all interlocking criteria. This in-depth visual understanding helps minimize costly placement errors and project delays. By quickly identifying potential issues, corrections can be made faster and at lower cost. The 3D model can be shared with all project stakeholders, and placement sections are validated as the project progresses, facilitating end-of-project handover operations.

Creating the as-built 3D model can be done automatically block by block during construction using our Seabim Placement Companion solution or in post-processing with the Seabim Block Finder module integrated into our Seabim Editor processing software. Each virtual block is automatically associated with its real counterpart by its number from the placement drawings.

The SEABIM® Editor software is the most comprehensive tool on the market for visualizing block interlocking and verifying all placement criteria validated by block designers:

  • Bloc out-of-Profile
  • Column placement and orientation
  • Contacts
  • Underlayer stone extraction
  • Local and global density
  • Broken blocks
